The Family Jewels is an excellent alt-pop album with all kinds of other influences. Marina is the sole writer of a majority of the songs on the album, and it does an amazing job of showing her writing prowess. In this post, I’ve written a short analysis of the lyrical themes present in each of the songs on the standard edition. Are You Satisfied? Are you satisfied with an average life? Do I need to lie to make my way in life? Marina opens the album by addressing her ambitions in fame. The first and second verses exhibit her can-do attitude, with her saying things such as "I do not give a damn if you don't believe" and "they say I'm a control freak driven by a greed to succeed nobody can stop me". However, the bridge and choruses find Marina questioning if this life is really for her. She asks herself she is truly satisfied with all the things that come with fame. The second prechorus starts addressing her own personal issues, with lines such as "it's my problem if I have no friends and feel I want to die". This clash of personal issues with achieving fame and success comes up a lot in the album, making Are You Satisfied? a great way to introduce the album. Shampain Drinking champagne made by the angel Who goes by the name of Glittering Gabriel This song addresses a situation that I'm sure plenty of people on this sub can relate to: drinking to forget. Marina is facing bouts of insomnia and regret over her life choices, so she tries to drink away her problems with some champagne. The title of this track not only sounds like "champagne", it's also a portmanteau of the words shame and pain, which shows the reasons behind her drinking. The choice of champagne, a drink associated with the upper class and sophistication, alludes to her struggles with success and fame. I Am Not A Robot Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot This song is about how it's important to show emotion and be vulnerable. Marina is reassuring herself that she can't be expected to be some perfect machine doing everything without ever being sad. After all, we're all human, and it's important to let our emotions out. Personally, this song hits me the hardest - I have a tendency to bottle up my emotions and try to overachieve, so when Marina says "it's okay to say you got a weak spot, you don't always have to be on top" I feel spoken to. Girls Girls they never befriend me cuz I fall asleep when they speak Of all the calories they eat! We go from the great message of I Am Not A Robot to the not-so-great message of Girls. It’s pretty much r/notliketheothergirls in a song. Marina has looked back on the song much after its release describing the lyrics as bit misogynistic and cringey. This is shown the most clearly in the chorus, especially with the lyrics above. However, some of lyrics could be interpreted as Marina deconstructing society’s view on women. For example, the prechorus is “Girls are not meant to fight dirty, never look a day past thirty, not gonna bend over and curtsy for you”, which could be seen as Marina mocking typical sexist viewpoints. Overall, this is probably one of the weaker points of the album lyrically. Mowgli's Road There's a fork in the road, I do as I am told, and I don't know don't know don't know don't know who I wanna be Mowgli's Road finds Marina facing a decision in her career. She doesn’t know what path to take with her life and her music. When writing the song, Marina didn’t know whether or not she wanted to become a big mainstream pop star or a smaller more indie artist. Marina questions who she wants to be, what she wants to do, and whether or not she can do it. Society is pressuring her to be one way, she might want to be another way, and overall, this song is ripe with confusion. Obsessions We've got our obsessions I wanna erase every nasty thought that bugs me every day of every week This is one of Marina's most vulnerable and, in my opinion, best written songs. It describes her experiences with anxiety and OCD and how it affects her life and relationships. A lot of the song is about how her anxious tendencies affect her relationship - Marina feels like she is handling the relationship poorly because of her obsessive behaviors. The second verse is especially powerful - Marina sings about an experience with having a mental breakdown at a supermarket. While choosing a packet of crackers, Marina gets paranoid that she's choosing the wrong one, she feels like people are starting and whispering, and she ends up deciding to go home facing a week without food because of the immense anxiety. This song was her debut single, and it was an excellent choice to display her great songwriting skills. Hollywood Hollywood infected your brain You wanted kissing in the rain This song is all about Marina's obsession with Hollywood and America. She describes how she's "obsessed with the mess that's America" and sings about American fame culture. Marina analyzes how Hollywood and America as a whole can brainwash you into wanting a picture-perfect life fit for a movie, which is simply not realistic. This song also has one of her most iconic lines: "Oh my god, you look just like Shakira, no no, you're Catherine Zeta, actually my name's Marina". This line might seem silly at first, but it represents the American media's tendency to make comparisons between female artists who have little in common. This song was also her most commercially successful off the album, debuting at number 12 on the U. K. charts. The Outsider All I know is I cannot pretend So I'm sitting on the outside again In this song, Marina struggles with feeling out of place in a social circle. She doesn't fit in, and she knows. She hesitates to join conversations, suppresses her inner feelings, and feels immense pressure to just leave. Marina questions whether or not it's worth it to keep associating with these people, and she feels that she's incredibly different from the rest of the group. (Note: the part where she screams "cuz I'm a fucKING WILD CARD! " is the most iconic few seconds of any song don’t @ me) Guilty Guilty on the run, and I know what I have done Guilty on the run, and I’m never forgiven In this song, Marina vividly describes a horrible dream that she had in which she killed a dog. This might seem like an incredibly outlandish thing to write a song about, but Marina makes it work. She depicts her incredible regret and guilt over what she’s done. She sources her reasoning for the murder to be because of her being a kid looking for her father, a theme that comes up later in Seventeen. Marina does a great job of conveying her emotions on this track - when I listen I even start to feel guilty for no reason. Hermit the Frog They call him Hermit the frog, he's looking for a dog Did you find your bitch in me? It's unclear exactly what this song is about - Marina has never said anything about the meaning, and the lyrics themselves are vague. Many fans speculate that it's about Marina losing her virginity to the wrong man. What can be told from the song is that Marina had a bad experience with a man. He initially wanted to find someone who’s a stereotypical submissive woman (hence “he’s looking for a dog”), and although Marina was initially putting up an act, once the man discovered her true self (i. e. when she “broke her glass balloon”), he started to dislike her and eventually broke up with her. Oh No! I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no! This song finds Marina becoming exactly what she was afraid of. It harkens back to the themes of Are You Satisfied? and Mowgli's Road, both songs that concern Marina’s doubts about success. She goes full circle with this song - Mowgli’s Road contains the line “I don’t know don’t know don’t know who I wanna be” and Oh No! has “I know exactly what I want and who I want to be”. Marina has become the stereotypical neutral and pristine celebrity, which was exactly what she didn’t want to do. Seventeen Could never tell you what happened the day I turned seventeen The rise of a king and the fall of a queen This song describes Marina’s tumultuous relationship with her father. Her parents got separated when she was 4, which caused tension in her family life. Marina went to live with her father in Athens, Greece when she was 16, and that caused much of the conflict that this song is about. The song explains how her father disapproves of her and how she disapproves of her father. They disagree on everything, and they can’t get along at all. This song has rebellious teenager written all over it, which makes sense being that it was part of her first EP, Mermaid vs. Sailor, released on MySpace in 2007. Numb I feel numb most of the time Lower I get, the higher I’ll climb Marina closes the album with a heartbreaking song that wraps up all of the themes. Her obsession with becoming a star has completely ruined her personal life. She has gotten rid of her family and friends, and is just a shell of her past self. Ironically, the less and less happy she is, the more and more she wants to be a star. The song seems contradictory in a way - she acknowledges that she is giving up so much for fame, but she keeps going anyway. She may have succeeded with fame, but at what cost?
